INFORMATION ABOUT ONLINE.UNR.EDU
The University of Nevada at Reno recognizes the value and potential of using the online environment to increase teaching and learning effectiveness. This focus will not only promote instructional excellence, but will also provide a flexible and expanded learning environment for today's diverse student population.
ONLINE LEARNING MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of the online learning program is to provide the support and resources that will enable faculty to effectively use the Web and multimedia technologies to deliver and enhance instruction.

This mission is consistent with and supportive of UNR's mission in several ways. The following two goals have been identified as integral to the university's mission:

  • Continually improve the quality of teaching, research and public service activities.

  • Develop a curriculum that is sensitive to change, but which places a special value on a liberal arts foundation. (University of Nevada, Reno 2000-2001 Catalog, 2000, p.10)

The online learning program specifically supports three components associated with these two goals:

  • Ensure that the university’s library, computing center and telecommunications systems will be able to provide the resources attendant to the needs of the instructional and research programs.

  • Assure that all students, either upon entering the university, or upon admission to degree programs, have acquired basic verbal, oral, computational, analytical and computer skills.

  • Provide an opportunity for adults to upgrade their educational and professional backgrounds through continuing education courses and programs. (University of Nevada, Reno 2000-2001 Catalog, 2000, p.10)

Additionally, the online learning program supports a major priority established the Approaching the 21st Century: Academic Master Plan for 1997-2001.

The university has made progress and is continuing to build a reliable information infrastructure. We will use this infrastructure to acquire, organize, manage, and provide systematic access to information, regardless of format, and to facilitate the enhancement of instruction, student learning, research, and outreach activities, regardless of location. (Forum for the Future, 1996, p. 11)
